The Missing Puzzle Piece Had Four Paws

By Judy Layne

Sometimes, life has a way of telling a story that no one could have written. When a rescued dog named Puzzle found a forever home with someone whose tattooed arm had a missing puzzle piece, the connection was impossible to ignore. It was one of those rare moments when coincidence gives way to something that feels much bigger – as though fate had quietly snapped the final puzzle piece into place.

The first six years of Puzzle’s life didn’t reflect the care and compassion that all animals deserve. The SPCA Enforcement Team rescued this sweet girl in December 2024. She was with the SPCA for seven long months while her complex medical needs – hookworm, a leg abnormality, a hypersensitive GI tract and a chronic ‘happy tail’ that had to be amputated – were addressed.

Puzzle had definitely been through a lot. She dreamed of finding a forever home where she would be safe and loved. On July 2, 2025, her dream came true. Brett and Jodi had lost their 13 year old pitty, Gauge, in January. Brett saw Puzzle’s bio and photo and fell in love instantly. For several nights, the couple revisited Puzzle’s story many times. Brett would say, “I wonder what Puzzle is doing right now.” As fate would have it, the next day, Brett’s work dispatched him to a location right beside the Dartmouth Shelter! He knew that he had to meet Puzzle.

When Jodi joined Brett, they were charmed by Puzzle’s sweet personality. Jodi said “We have always believed that a dog should choose you as much as you choose them. We are big dog people, and we had dealt with many special needs that our beloved Gauge had in her elder years. We knew that with the support of our amazing vet team, we could give Puzzle the life she deserved. We went outside with Puzzle, and as soon as I sat down on the ground, she plopped her butt right on my lap. We knew in that moment she was part of our family.”

Puzzle settled into her new home immediately. Jodi recalled “She climbed up onto her own sofa and fell fast asleep for a few hours. She was a bit shy and timid at first, almost like she couldn’t believe this was her new life. With time, she seemed to know she was exactly where she belonged.”

The couple couldn’t believe the coincidences that kept unfolding. First, there was Brett’s tattoo – a full sleeve with one puzzle piece deliberately left empty. Then their adopted dog was named Puzzle. Finally, they recalled that Brett had gotten the tattoo about six years earlier, almost exactly Puzzle’s age. Suddenly, the empty piece didn’t seem empty anymore. Puzzle was the missing piece!

After getting Puzzle comfortably settled, the couple started conversations with their vet team. “We knew before adopting Puzzle that she had all kinds of health issues,” said Brett. “But with dedicated time, love and care, we’ve been able to essentially eliminate any infections, food allergies, etc. Fast forward one year and Puzzle is medication and specialty diet-free!”

Puzzle is definitely living her best life. Jodi shared “She enjoys going to stores and hanging out on patios. She loves finding a ray of sunshine and soaking up every moment of it. She treasures her toys and can often be heard squeaking away. She also loves going for walks, car rides and camping. She has a gentle spirit that makes her a joy to be around children and other dogs.”

Puzzle has brought much happiness and laughter back into the couple’s life. “Her antics are hilarious,” chuckled Brett. “Puzzle is a huge cuddle-bug with her chosen people. We don’t think she realizes that she is nearly 100 pounds! She has a special place in our getting-ready routine. Whenever we pick up a brush, she’s right there waiting for her turn. Then we discovered that Puzzle has a love of mirrors. After placing one at her height and watching her admire her reflection, we gave her two of her own- including one above her food bowl for mealtime mirror watching!”

The couple shared “Puzzle spent many months at the SPCA. We can’t thank them enough for the care they gave Puzzle and for preparing her for the happiest years of her life. Their compassion gave us the gift of Puzzle and we will always be grateful. We know that Puzzle didn’t have a great start in life and it’s so heartwarming to watch her grow and ‘learn how to be a dog’ as she truly relaxes into her new life.”

July 2nd was the first anniversary of Puzzle’s ‘Gotcha Day’ and the couple brought her to the shelter to see Catherine, knowing they shared a special bond. Jodi said “But we quickly saw that Puzzle’s connection was with the whole SPCA team. We worried that Puzzle may think she was being returned, but instead, she raced through the doors to greet everyone she loved. She knows where her home is, but she also knows where her friends are.”

The couple’s final thoughts? “Adopting Puzzle was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. As she continues to grow into her own personality, we’re committed to giving her whatever she needs.  Dogs who are given a second chance seem to carry a special gratitude and Puzzle reminds us of that every day.”

Puzzle has become woven into her family’s everyday life in the sweetest ways. Their updates to the SPCA are signed ‘P, B, and J’ – a playful nod to peanut butter and jam – and she even has a middle name, Louise. It was given to her in a moment of laughter when her family called out ‘Puzzle Louise!’ and it quickly became official.

Brett’s tattoo will always have its missing piece. It was never meant to be filled with ink because the missing piece wasn’t just meant to be part of the artwork. The missing piece had four paws.
