Adopt

The homeless animals in our shelters are waiting patiently and hoping for that moment when someone will look into their eyes and see how special they are.  Become a hero by rescuing a pet and creating space for more animals to be saved.

ADOPT A BEST FRIEND

Volunteer

We have more than 500 volunteers that help with animal care, admin, fostering, fundraising, TNR, and supporting our thrift stores. Come see for yourself how rewarding it is and why we’ve been voted as “Best Place to Volunteer” for 7 years in a row!

DONATE YOUR TIME

Foster

Foster families provide socialization and love to pets who are young or need to recover from illnesses or injuries.  When you temporarily open up your heart and home to a foster pet, we will provide all the supplies and training you need.

OPEN YOUR HOME

Support Second Chances

The Kings proudly follows no-kill principles and does not receive any government funding for their shelter.

Some pets need one-on-one support to overcome abuse and neglect. Others need emergency medical treatment to survive.

Your support saves lives. Please donate to help local pets at the Kings SPCA today.

History

The Kings County Animal Shelter began because of a group of people who met around a kitchen table and decided to do something about helping homeless cats in Kings County. On April 17, 1990 the new Board of Directors signed on. In the early years, Kings Animal Shelter placed homeless animals in foster homes, held regular adoption days at a local mall and responded to calls for assistance through its network of volunteers. We also offered Spay/Neuter certificates and medical assistance to those in need.

In 1990, the Board of Directors decided to start their campaign to raise sufficient funding to construct an animal shelter in Kings County. The Municipality of the County of Kings provided a 50 year lease on a 2.2 acre parcel of land in Waterville and a $5,000 grant to the fund raising account.

In 2007, sufficient funding was raised to commence construction and the building was completed in April, 2008. However, it wasn’t until June 2009 that supplies and equipment were in place and the Kings County Animal Shelter opened its doors. Since then, the building has been full to capacity with a new animal quickly replacing each one that has been adopted. Some stay longer than others but every one remains at the shelter until the right family comes along.

The Kings Animal Shelter offers low-cost spay/neuter programs to help those in financial need to get their pets altered or cover the cost of euthanasia. It also offers a TNR (trap/neuter/return) Program to those who have feral cat colonies on their property and wish to have the animals spayed/neutered to avoid increases in the colony population.

The Kings County Animal Shelter obtains the majority of its annual operational funds through donations of money, supplies and equipment, bequests and fundraising efforts. We do not receive any government funding for our shelters so we rely heavily on the generosity of the citizens of Kings County.

We support other community organizations by providing work term placements, community service opportunities for government program participants, assisting school students in meeting their community service credits and providing an opportunity for clients of the NS Rehabilitation Center to interact with animals and provide volunteer services.

We also provide information to the general public on proper animal care and animal legislation through media coverage, daily information radio ads and a weekly radio interview/animal profile, our website, newsletter, pamphlets/brochures and responding to email and telephone inquiries.
