From standoffish and shy, to brave and bold. Blue’s story is a testament to what patience, love and dedication can do to help a timid dog come out of their shell.
When Blue arrived at the Cape Breton Shelter in February 2026, he was very closed off, nervous and uninterested in interacting with anyone. Over the next few weeks, he started to slowly open up, and bond with staff and eventually became friends with some volunteers. He was posted for adoption one month later and spent a few weeks waiting for the right person to find him.
In April, Troy and Corrine stopped by the shelter hoping to find a new best friend. Blue captured their hearts right away! “Blue is our first dog from a shelter. We felt an instant connection with him; it was almost like he picked us,” Corrine said.
After taking him home, they explained, “He was very much a velcro dog at first. He had to be by one of us at all times for the first few weeks. His nervous energy took a while to calm down. At first there were a lot of hard nibbles and overreacting to unfamiliar noises and situations.”
Even though it was a bit challenging at first, their unconditional love for him never wavered. He is still quite the velcro dog, but his family has said, “We’re still working through some of his issues, but the difference in him has been amazing to watch.”

Blue has grown accustomed to his new daily routine. He gets out of bed when his parents do, then eagerly follows Corrine around until she’s ready for their walk, which is one of their favourite things to do together. Most days, he also enjoys a fun playdate with one of his dog friends! Because he is so closely bonded to his family, he even waits to go to bed until both of his parents do.
He has made such incredible progress since his adoption with the support and care of his family and friends. He even attends a local doggy daycare! The impact his family has had on him and to help him learn and find his courage has been heartwarming to see. On the impact he has had on his family, they said, “Having him here has definitely made home livelier. He is so very protective of his family and home. We were pleasantly surprised to see how much he loves children. We are also noticing how much patience he has when playing with other dogs. We’re learning so much from him.”
When asked about what advice they would have for other families looking to adopt a furry friend from a shelter, Blue’s family said, “Listen to your intuition, give it time at home and have lots of patience and love. Try understanding that these dogs have been through things most of us don’t understand. We’re so happy we took the chance by giving him a chance.”

If they were to describe Blue in one word, it would be “Perfect”. If you are looking for a perfect new best friend… look no further!
