The Nova Scotia SPCA is looking for a compassionate, dedicated and dog-savvy person to join our HRM Animal Redemption Centre Team in the role of Shelter Supervisor.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable with animals and professional in their communications and demeanour.
We anticipate this position working a four-day work week (Friday through Monday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm). This position helps support responding to urgent animal by-law-related calls on behalf of the Halifax Regional Municipality, and requires flexibility as it includes on-call shifts as scheduled on holidays and overnights. This will require travel across the HRM when required. A valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract are required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures and behaviour history.
- Communicate on daily challenges, ongoing operational needs and trends/challenges to identify shelter support needs
- Providing supervision and support to shelter staff.
- Support communication efforts by ensuring policy and procedure changes are communicated, clarified, and implemented.
- Must be willing to handle urgent and sometimes emotionally challenging situations involving animals and the public
- Provide a wide range of administrative and clerical duties.
- Assist with animal care tasks, including all nutritional, housing, grooming and medical needs are met daily according to approved processes.
- Provides humane handling and care for all animals.
- Respond to and action calls from 311 and other designated contacts for after-hours animal services.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
- Prior experience in animal care in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic setting, especially dog-related experience.
- Experience managing challenging animal behaviours safely and effectively.
- Physical ability to bend and lift and carry up to 40 lbs regularly.
- Experience working independently and as part of a team in a busy, collaborative, and task-oriented environment.
- Professional demeanour when navigating difficult situations.
- Experience and competence in handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
