Barn Cat Adoptions

Interested in providing a home to a Barn Cat?

As part of our “No Kill” mandate, we are constantly trying to find opportunities for semi-feral and feral cats that can’t be adopted out through our shelter and foster based locations located around the province.

The cats in this program are not your typical house cat, they have come from an environment where they have lived outside for most or all of their lives. These cats can not be rehabilitated without often years of intensive socialization and if placed in a home environment show signs of stress and may growl, hiss or scratch. For various reasons we are not able to release these cats back to the environment they came from, typically because there is no longer a caretaker in that area. Typically at first you will not be able to touch these cats, but with time you may see some progress, although they will never quite be your typical pet cat.

In these cases, we try and find members of the public who are willing to take them in as barn cats. These cats come fully vetted (vaccinated, dewormed, flea treated and either
spayed or neutered). The owner agrees to provide access to a warm/dry part of the barn and to also provide long term food/water. If you have a space or know of an opportunity for one of these cats please email catcolony@spcans.ca or fill out the adoption application and specify ‘Barn Cat’ in the location.

There is no adoption fee for cats in this program.

You won’t find these cats on our website, but you can get on a wait list to be contacted when we have a cat in need of a barn placement.  The ideal home for these cats would be in a barn type environment, where they will have safety from wildlife, and a warm place to sleep.  You would need to commit to keep them confined  while they learn this is their new home, and ongoing to provide food and medical care in the future for any injuries.
