Thrift Store Shift Lead – North Nova SPCA Thrift Store

Salary: $17-18/hr + depending on experience

The Nova Scotia SPCA is seeking a dedicated Shift Lead to join our fast-paced, social enterprise thrift store, at our North Nova SPCA Thrift Store. In addition to guiding a team and store, this individual will also be a point of contact for thrift store volunteers, donors and members of the community in respect to the Nova Scotia SPCA Thrift Stores.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Oversee, facilitate and ensure the processing of donated items; manage the rotation of items and the disposal of donated items in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure processes for store operations are adhered to – including opening and closing the store; procedures for accepting, sorting, pricing donations; security procedures for staff and volunteers, handling and stewardship of cash and resources.
  • Oversee, facilitate and ensure the recruitment and training of a thrift store volunteer base that will support the operations of the SPCA Thrift Store
  • Oversee, facilitate and ensure appropriate consultation with volunteers on a regular basis, addressing concerns and sharing ideas.
  • Provide timely direction and written and verbal feedback to stakeholders.
  • Assist in staff & volunteer training in Society policies, processes and procedures.
  • Ensure the display of merchandise inside thrift stores enhances the appearance and appeal of the store.
  • Provide service to customers according to SPCA Thrift standards and ensure everyone follows those same standards.
  • Promote excellence in the customer service experience for all visitors to the thrift store through staff & volunteer training.
  • Use Society resources (financial and non-financial) prudently.
  • Acknowledge and follow financial policies of the Society.

Required Skills

The following are some of the skills required for this role:

  • Time Management: work with multiple staff, and volunteers of different abilities to ensure successful workflows and work processes.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Whether it is dealing with staff, volunteers, donors or customers, this person will have to make statements, decisions and assessments that may impact the Society.
  • Speaking and Writing: very strong written and oral communication skills are a must.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, show initiative and creativity, exercise good judgment, and act with tact and courtesy in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects/deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain neat and accurate records, files and documents related to the work.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite is an asset.
  • Retail leadership experience is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 40 pounds regularly

Hours of Work

  • Work responsibilities require a standard 32-40 hours per week.
  • Shifts will be a mix of weekdays and weekends as required to meet the needs of the business.
