The Nova Scotia SPCA advocates that fireworks, pyrotechnics, and gas-fired explosions should never be permitted to be used at events and is concerned about the impact fireworks have on companion animals and wildlife in the vicinity.
The Nova Scotia SPCA is in favour of a ban on the private sale and use of fireworks across Nova Scotia due to the significant fear and distress they cause to animals which compromises their welfare. Animals change their behaviour in response to loud and abrupt noises and this can lead to physical injury, disruption of feeding, stress and mortality, abandonment of young, all of which are signs of mental suffering.

Many pets have extreme anxiety and panic when they hear fireworks. Running away from the noise is a survival instinct and many animals go missing – or worse. The blasts are startling and confusing. Fireworks also disorient wild animals causing them to abandon babies, run in busy streets, or fly into buildings. In addition to potentially damaging their sensitive hearing, the chemicals are poisonous to inhale and ingest.

Burns and eye injuries are most frequently reported but some injuries – especially ones in the manufacturing warehouses – can be fatal. Even more, fireworks can distressing for people living with PTSD and on the autism spectrum. The loud blasts can trigger traumatic memories and be overwhelming and stressful to cope with.

Environment
Many of us know the risks and impacts of fireworks for pets and people, but are completely unaware of the serious damages and environmental impacts. The chemical reaction of fireworks releases smoke and gases into the environment. These are some of the primary greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. Fireworks also drastically reduce air quality and increase air pollution, toxic litter, and risk of fires.
