A Shelter Supervisor is a key member of the Nova Scotia SPCA team. This individual helps to support the Shelter Manager/Coordinator and fellow co-workers in the day-to-day operational practices of an Animal Shelter, making certain they are compliant with the Society’s animal care standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures and behaviour history.
  •  Communicate with the Animal Shelter Manager/Coordinator on daily challenges, ongoing operational needs and trends/challenges to identify shelter support needs.
  • Providing supervision and support to shelter staff.
  • Support communication efforts by ensuring policy and procedure changes are communicated, clarified, and implemented.
  • Assisting the Animal Shelter Manager/Coordinator with training new staff/volunteers in reception & animal care duties, including but not limited to behaviour, cleaning, adoptions, Pet Point, etc.
  • Assist with adequate monitoring and filling surgical needs to meet daily quotas.
  • Assisting the Shelter Manager/Coordinator with inventory checks and ordering to ensure the facility always has a sufficient supply of needed diets, medical supplies, tests, etc. And other duties as assigned.
  • Place outbound calls, emails, and messages to verify foster & volunteer satisfaction and/or to educate the public regarding SPCA services & programs.
  • Place outbound calls, emails, and messages to confirm appointment bookings, or to provide appointment instructions.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the Foster and Palliative program within the shelter.
  • Maintaining the in-shelter volunteer program.
  • Participates in the marketing of animals for adoption by reviewing adoption profiles, ensuring animal profiles are posted to the website and monitoring fee reductions are occurring, when necessary, by monitoring adoptability and length of time available for adoption.
  • Assist the Marketing & Communication team to ensure pictures/stories.
  • Assist development with facilitating partnerships with community groups, organizations, and other stakeholders to advance the SPCA’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Coordinate with off-site partners to ensure animals are moving to off-site locations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with off-site partners in combination with the Shelter Manager/Coordinator.
  • Maintaining positive interactions with the public, co-workers and volunteers in a fast paced, sometimes hectic and noisy environment while remaining calm, focused resourceful and efficient is critical to this role.
  • Maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures and behaviour history.
  • Provide a wide range of administrative and clerical duties.
  • Assures all nutritional, housing, grooming and medical needs are met daily according to approved processes. They are responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people. Provides humane handling and care for all shelter animals.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A Veterinary Assistant certificate or equivalent work experience is a requirement of this position.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team in a busy, collaborative, and task-oriented environment.
  • Proven dependability with a record of regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Strong time and task management skills, including multi-tasking in a busy environment, are required.
  • Excellent attention to detail is required for this position.
  • Excellent people skills with a professional approach to all interactions with animals, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and office procedures.
  • Knowledge of Databases is considered an asset for this position.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint would be considered an asset for this position.
  • A driver’s license is required
  • Required skills and qualifications will continue to develop for this position and may be updated from time to time.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday is required.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 40 pounds regularly.
  • Working conditions include working alone, working outside in varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some meetings.

Hours of Work:

Hours of work range between 8 am and 4:30 pm daily. There will be a regular weekly set schedule, which will involve at least one weekend day.
